Alberta RCMP investigate suspected arson at two churches in Barrhead

Barrhead RCMP and Barrhead Fire Services are investigating two arson fires that have severely damaged two of the town’s churches on Thursday night.

At approximately 7:52 p.m. police responded to a structural fire at The Glenreagh Church, located on Range Road 40 in Barrhead. At 9 p.m. police responded to a second structure fire at The United Church, located on Range Road 54 in Barrhead, according to a Friday morning news release.

Fire crews attended both blazes and the fires were extinguished quickly, but despite the efforts of first responders, both churches had extensive damage.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fires.

RCMP and fire crews continue to investigate the cause of the fires, which are being treated as arson. After the initial investigation from the fire examiner, it was determined that the fires were intentionally set.

An older model two-tone truck was observed leaving the scene at The Glenreagh church and is believed to be linked to the fires.

Barrhead is approximately 120 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
