Can Man Dan wants people to join him in support of Edmonton’s Food Bank at Southbrook Sobeys this weekend to make sure every kid has food on the table this Christmas.

The city’s food bank has an increased need for food support this year and Dan Johnstone who’s also known as Can Man Dan believes some kids would have no Christmas without the community’s support.

“I want kids to have the hot meal on their plate and the gift open up on Christmas day and it should be a fun day,” said Johnstone.

Growing up as a kid and being raised up by a single mother, Johnstone’s family relied sometimes on the generosity of the food bank.

“My family would probably have no Christmas at all, because we were super poor and stuff,” he added.

“I am out in the cold’

Part of Johnstone’s 13-year-old annual camp-out is to stay “out in the cold” freezing and away from family to fill up his truck with toys, food or money.

“The goal this Christmas was 50,000 pounds in new toys for Santas Anonymous, which we hit. And now I’m currently in the one for the food bank and I want to hit 50,000 pounds of food for them,” he added.

He says this year, there’s a very good chance to hit their goal. People are invited to swing by and donate anytime day or night.

“People can open up their pantries and bring something cold or they can come to Sobeys here at South Brook and buy something here and donate it or just donate online,” he said.

The four-night camp-out started on Wednesday at Belmont Sobeys in the north-side of the city and then moved to the south where it will be wrapped up on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Southbrook Sobeys located at 1109 James Mowatt Trail, S.W.

Edmonton’s Food Bank provides food for more than 34,000 people through its hamper programs every month. It receives no core funding for food purchases or operations from any level of government and relies on the generosity of the community and food industry partners to assist those in need in Edmonton.
