An Edmonton man has won more than $1.6 million after discovering he was sitting on a winning lottery ticket that was several months old.

In a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Giuseppe Bruno said it was during a visit with his grandchildren that he decided to check his old lottery tickets using the Lotto Spot phone app.

“I saw the amount on my screen and yelled for my wife. She came in the room asking what all the hollering was about. We were both dumbfounded,” Bruno said in the news release, adding that he then got his children to double-check the victory.

“We weren’t sure it was real. It’s very surreal, and really exciting,” he said. “To be honest, we’re still processing and unsure what to do with it. We’ll pay off some bills and share with our family, but after that, the money will probably just sit in the bank for a while.”

Bruno bought the $8 ticket from Mother Hubbard’s Foodstuffs at 7923 106 Ave., in the community of Forest Heights. He split the $5 million Lotto 6/49 Classic Draw jackpot with two winners in Ontario, read the release.

Bruno is not the only lucky lottery player in Alberta of late. Lotto 6/49 tickets purchased in Calgary for the Dec. 16 and Dec. 20 draws both won $1 million prizes. In addition, a Daily Grand ticket bought in Alberta somewhere outside the two major cities won the big prize of $7 million — or $1,000 a day for life — on Dec. 18.

Lotto winners have a year to claim their victories from the draw date.
