Shifts in Focus: In his latest show of movement-filled abstract paintings, Phil Darrah notes, “a series of accidents can sometimes be very refreshing. I use a particular weight of canvas and when ordering a new roll, I found my usual width was not in stock. This meant a slightly wider width of roll and when I began to lay out the roll it happened that the most economical division the platforms with this new dimension led to a more extreme proportion. Ugly Sweaters Party: There is a special, extra-sweaty version of Sweat Fridays this week as Edmonton’s favourite little theatre that could challenges you to bring out your worst woolly top and bump and thrash ‘til 3 a.m. Speaking of the trains no longer running, the DJ list is off the rails, including Joses, Mae, Caraboo, St Croix, Rudy Roman, Polyesterday and at least that many more, so sonic ruts will not be stuck in. For the physical activity alone — shortbread season has arrived, after all — you should find yourself at this eye-torturing winter-wear party!

The Boy and the Heron: Defying reports of his retirement, Earth’s greatest animator Hayao Miyazaki returns in perfect form with a swan song tonally inspired by his favourite childhood book, How Do You Live? The talking heron is just a breadcrumb from the utter feast of dreamy mayhem, including an army of parakeets and a most wonderful sort of time travel. My favourite film of 2023 (sorry, Barbie and Godzilla Minus One), you won’t stop thinking about it for days. Also worth seeing both subtitled and dubbed, thanks to the stellar U.S. voice cast.
