Edmonton police confirm two deaths following weekend encampment fires

Edmonton Police Service have confirmed a man and a woman are dead following two separate tent fires at encampments over the weekend.

On Saturday, at approximately 7:15 p.m., first responders were called to a tent fire at an encampment behind a shelter near 100 Street and 105 Avenue. The tent was said to be occupied by a 54-year-old man, who died from his injuries.

Police said the initial investigation does not appear to be suspicious, however, a final determination will be made following an investigation by the Edmonton Fire Rescue Service and findings from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME).

On Sunday at approximately 3 p.m., EPS and EFRS among other first responders, were called to a second tent fire in an encampment at 95 Street and 105 Avenue. Responders discovered an unidentified woman, believed to be in her mid-20s dead inside the multi-layered tent, once the fire was extinguished.

Both deaths are currently under investigation pending reports from EFRS and the Edmonton medical examiner.
