Starting next month, the Edmonton Transit System is retiring older fare vending machines and will be replacing them with Arc fare vending machines across the network.
The decision is part of an ongoing initiative to implement a regional Arc fare payment system. As of Nov. 1, transit riders will no longer be able to purchase ETS paper tickets or passes from older machines. Instead, single-use Arc tickets and reloadable Arc cards can be purchased through the new machines.

A news release from the City of Edmonton said all decommissioned machines will be turned off until they are removed and replaced. The city said signage will redirect riders to Arc fare vending machines.
“These Arc fare products will provide the majority of riders with a comparable fare option and offer more modern payment methods, including payment by cash, debit or credit cards,” said the statement.
Fare products that were available at the older machines, including paper tickets, will be available at ETS sales outlets throughout the city and via the online store. ETS paper ticket validators will remain available in transit spaces.
