The beacons are lit, and the Extreme Cold Warning has been raised once again. While a high of -16 C might seem almost balmy compared to last week’s temperatures, the 20 km/h super charge it into a wind chill of -40 in some areas of northern Alberta. If you absolutely need to leave the house, please bundle up. That wind chill is supposedly climbing back up to the -20 area over the weekend, with a high of -13 C on Saturday and a cloudy -11 C on Sunday. So, make sure to cover your hands, your ears, and any pet exposed pet appendages!

Extreme Cold Warning

Extreme cold warnings were updated Friday for areas of Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood park.

Extremely cold wind chill values near -40 continue this morning.

Temperatures are forecast to moderate this afternoon for most areas. Parts of northern Alberta may see wind chill values near -40 again tonight.

Cold Streets

City has extended its extreme weather response until Monday January 22 at 8 a.m. to help keep vulnerable Edmontonians safe during the cold. If cold weather conditions persist, it may be further extended.

A friendly reminder that the city has activated its extreme weather response to help vulnerable Edmontonians stay safe during the cold weather expected over the coming days.

According to data from Homeward Trust, as of January 6 there are a total of 2,987 people experiencing homelessness on Edmonton streets. Of those, 1,714 are provisionally accommodated, 518 are in shelters, 656 are unsheltered and 99 are unknown. However, provisional accommodation does not mean permanent housing.
