The former operator of an unlicensed Edmonton day home has been sentenced to three years in prison for making child porn.

The Crown had recommended five years, while defence sought two-and-a-half.

Police charged Baglole-Gaudet with possessing child porn in fall 2020. In 2021, he was hit with additional charges of producing the material after police discovered images of the day home children in Baglole-Gaudet’s collection. He eventually faced a total of eight charges, six of which were withdrawn following his guilty plea.

An agreed statement of facts says Baglole-Gaudet was discovered after he loaned his laptop to a romantic partner. Court heard Baglole-Gaudet — who apologized in court — was distraught at the revelation, telling the partner: “I’ve been like this since I was a kid. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

Police identified a total of 2,123 sexually explicit images of children on the laptop, including 11 images of the day home kids, who were aged six to eight.

During a sentencing hearing last month, the mother of one of the victims said she would carry the guilt of what happened to her child to her grave. Baglole-Gaudet himself apologized, saying he would “carry these regrets with me for the rest of my life.”

Baglole-Gaudet has been ordered to join the national sex offender registry after his release.
