City police closed a central Edmonton intersection Thursday morning after a two-vehicle collision sent a man who was panhandling in the area to hospital.

At around 11 a.m., Edmonton police responded to a collision between a Dodge Journey and a Ford Escape at the intersection of 109 Street and 111 Avenue. Following the impact, police said a 50-year-old man who was standing in the centre median was also struck.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries, police said. Neither of the drivers were injured.

Police said speed is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

Investigators remained on scene for several hours but reopened the intersection just after 3 p.m.
