Monday marked the first snowfall of the year, and driving conditions were challenging. Several collisions were reported.

RCMP told Postmedia the head-on collision was “indirectly” related to a 10-vehicle pileup caused by Monday’s icy roads.

“The fatal collision happened in the same area of the multi-vehicle collision near Blackfalds,” said Cpl. Mathew Howell.

“Preliminary investigation suggests the semi tried to slow down to follow traffic and hit a patch of ice.”

The pileup happened on Highway 2 southbound near Township Road 392 and led to evening closure of southbound QE11 south of junction Highway 597 near Blackfalds. All southbound traffic was stopped and rerouted to Highway 597 and Highway 2A. Despite the pileup, no injuries were reported.

The investigation continues.
