"Masterful performance": Social media reacts as Edmonton Oilers lose but find hope in Calvin Pickard

Article content

The Edmonton Oilers deservedly lost Game Five to the Vancouver Canucks, but Edmonton fans found a new hero and a new hope in goalie Calvin Pickard.

The Canucks out-hustled the Oilers from the second period to the end of the game. Vancouver had 20 Grade A shots in the game to just eight for the Oilers. When it comes to expected goals, that should mean about five goals for Vancouver, just two for Edmonton. Pickard kept the Oilers in it right to the final minute when a number of big name Oilers made crucial errors on J.T Miller’s winning goal.

That said, the result seemed inevitable save for Pickard’s many incredible saves. Here are some of the highlights on Pickard from social media:

Edmonton Oilers announcer Jack Michaels (before the game)

Calvin Pickard makes his first back-to-back starts in the NHL since March 2021.

Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli

We’re talking about a 32-year-old journeyman who’s never played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After the second period, where the Canucks had 11 Grade A shots to one for the Oilers:

Oilers fan X – Kennedy @kennedystrash

Calvin Pickard is Daddy

Oilers kirsten 🩵 @lilkd4wg

Pickard the only player that wants to win this game. I feel f*cking sick.

Hockey scout Dan Tencer @dantencer

However this turns out, cheers to Cal Pickard. He’s the only reason this one is all square. Giving his team a chance with a huge performance.

Oilers fan Stu The Penguin @StuThePenguin

McDavid struggling too. Entire team except Pickard.

Inside Oilers @InsideOilers

If it wasn’t for Pickard, this game would easily be 6-2 Canucks. The rest of the Oilers were absolutely horrendous. WAKE UP!!!!

I honestly can’t believe the #Canucks haven’t connected yet, Pickard is swimming, keep those point shots coming, bodies to the net, someone is finding the cage

Former Canucks goalie Eddie Lack🇸🇪🇺🇸🇨🇦 @eddielack

Backup goalie thoughts:

– Pettersson looks good. That 🇸🇪 line looks good

– Pickard looks great, not great second goal but made plenty amazing saves.

– 5v5 it’s Canucks game but gotta stay out of the box. One more penalty and it’s prob back of net.

Vancouver hockey writer for The Athletic Thomas Drance @ThomasDrance

Canucks outshot Edmonton 12-2 at 5-on-5 in the 2nd period. Even though the Oilers PP went O-fer, the frequency of 5-on-4 play probably permitted Edmonton to survive VAN’s push. An absolute mauling with almost no relationship to what we saw in Games 2, 3 and 4 of this series.

NHL commentator John Shannon @JShannonhl

Canucks’ PP is now 0 for 4…Pickard has been the best penalty killer for the Oilers.

Oilers fan x-Adrian “Ferns” Fernando @Browndalorian

This is a masterful performance from Calvin Pickard

Pickard has made more big saves tonight than Skinner made in the first three games

And after the game…

Oilers fan Sam @SamInYEG

Pickard didn’t deserve that L but everyone else sure did

Adam @OilersAdam

Calvin Pickard was the best Oiler tonight. On to game 6. Hope will never die.

Hockey commentator Dustin Nielson @nielsonTSN1260

Three Quick Thoughts….

1. Canucks deserved it tonight, simple as that.

2. Let’s be honest, McDavid and the big guns failed them tonight.

3. Wasted a great game from Pickard, so now what between the pipes.

Oilers fan Schmiddy The GOAT @SchmiddyG

The guys did not play with any hustle tonight. Embarassing for such a clutch game. The only person who deserved to win tonight was Pickard. Pathetic showing

Oilers radio announcer Bob Stauffer @Bob_Stauffer

Calvin Pickard gave the Edmonton Oilers a punchers chance. Vancouver brought it!

Hard, firm, physical, direct! EDM 0/5 on the PP-Canucks gained momentum with kills. Oilers best line was Janmark-Ryan-Brown.

Oilers fan Resplendent Beetle @rangerbob94

4th line masterclass and the big boys lay an out of character egg. Poor Pickard played his heart out.

Pickard deserved the win. The Oilers deserved the loss.

Oilers Now announcer Brenden Escott @BrendenEscott

Instant reaction: I start Pickard in Game 6. He has not played his way out of the crease.

Oilers fan Tyson Munro @Tys35

Pickard made lots of saves tonight, but nobody is ready to have the conversation about how poorly he played all 3 goals against. If that’s Skinner, we riot

Oilers Daily @oilersdailyy

you play pickard again in game 6 btw. he was the only reason the canucks didn’t score 5-6 goals.

Oilers fan WheatNOil @WheatNOil

Pickard made it close. Let up 3 goals on 4 Expected Goals via Moneypuck. He gave them a chance to win & you couldn’t ask for more beyond him outright stealing it. Add to the fact that the Oilers had plenty of PP opportunities & couldn’t bury one.

Veteran NHL writer Ken Campbell @Ken_Campbell27

If the Oilers had received this goaltending in Games 1, 2 and 3, this series would have been a sweep for them.
