A Parkland County firefighter is facing child pornography charges after police seized number of computers and electronic devices, say the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams.

In October 2023, RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre informed ALERT Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit investigators of a man allegedly distributing child sexual abuse material via Snapchat.

Police said they arrested 26-year-old Matthew Shaw on June 5 and charged him with possessing, accessing and transmitting child porn as well as two counts of unsafely storing a firearm.

While his charges concern online and firearm offences, Shaw’s job put him in a “position of trust and authority,” ALERT said.

“We have charged suspects from all sorts of professions, all walks of life, and there is truly no demographic profile,” said Staff Sgt. Jon Morrison with ALERT ICE in a Thursday release.

“This underscores the [need] for awareness and education between parents and children concerning online safety.”

Kirsten Allen, communications advisor with Parkland County, told Postmedia the county was aware RCMP charged a paid, on-call firefighter, adding he was suspended from all firefighting duties pending the investigation.

Police released Shaw from custody on court-imposed conditions, and he is scheduled for court on July 3.
