“We weren’t expecting January 1 as I was induced on December 29,” Falk said in a Monday news release by Alberta Health Services (AHS). “It’s crazy she hung on for so long. We were hoping for ‘123123’, and we were surprised that she was born right at the stroke of midnight. Either way it’s a special day.”
Not long after Isley’s arrival, Calgary’s New Year’s baby made her appearance at the Foothills Medical Centre.
Parents Chris and Marina Qiro welcomed their new daughter, Marianthi, at 12:25 a.m. She weighed six pounds, five ounces, after a very brief and easy labour. Both baby and mother are healthy and happy, AHS said.

“We were at a New Year’s Eve party when my wife started feeling pain around 9 p.m.,” Chris said. “We went to the hospital, all dressed up, and watched the fireworks at midnight from our room. A few minutes later our daughter was born – it was the best gift ever!”
About a dozen friends and family showed up for a champagne toast outside the hospital this morning to celebrate Marianthi’s arrival.
Red Deer
Not to be left out, Red Deer welcomed their first baby in 2024 a little after 3 a.m. at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.
Parents Victoria Dorie and Scott Beardy welcomed their daughter Bailee to the world at 3:11 a.m. She weighed seven pounds and nine ounces. Bailee and Victoria are both doing well, AHS said.
“We weren’t sure if she would be a New Years baby or not when I went into labour,” Victoria said. “There were others in labour around the same time, so it was a bit of a surprise to be told we had the first one of the New Year here.
