The List: Larry Reese's Worlds of Wonder art opening includes piano and a mystery reading

Article content

Well-known and admired musician, actor, educator and artist Larry Reese has an opening exhibition of beautiful paintings happening Saturday called Worlds of Wonder, showing off his two distinctive styles.

“Just call me Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Reese jokes, noting the work is both “representational prairie landscapes, mountains, etc. — and more fantasy landscapes, based on the wood grain patterns in birch panels.”

These colourful latter ones are extra magnificent to behold, while many of the entire batch are painted en plein air — in the wild — based on specific locations in central Alberta.

“Others are located purely from my imagination,” explains the artist. “I’ve been actively painting for most of my life but this is the first show I’ve held in Edmonton since 2015.”

Reese talks about one of his more notable gigs playing a character named Tom Luckinbill.

“I have to say being on the set of Unforgiven was almost surreal. And although my part was basically a ‘you blink, you miss me role,’ I did have several lines and was paid as a principal actor.

“One day on set I was sketching and Gene Hackman came over and asked to see my drawings,” Reese continues. “He then said he went to art school and invited me to sketch with him. We did so on several occasions over the three weeks I was on set. “He’s a fine actor and a fine artist and a fine fellow as far as I’m concerned.”

That same praise applies to Reese.

Worlds of Wonder takes place over three days at emerging artist hotspot Trinity Gallery at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (10037 84 Ave.).
