Ballet Edmonton is poised to launch its new season this weekend with Ouvrir, a program compromising three works.

Translating from French as ‘Open’, Ouvrir will see two remounts and a brand new piece from Ethan Colangelo. This world premiere is the latest work from the Juilliard graduate, who was recently appointed choreographic associate for the National Ballet of Canada and has received buzz from around the world as an up-and-coming Canadian talent to watch for.

“I wanted to create a visual landscape where ideas meet and pull apart and create a dream-like state that allows the audience to find places of connection and relatability so they come with us on this journey,” Colangelo explains in a statement about his latest piece.

Also on the bill is Sum of All Parts, which was created for Ballet Edmonton by Giaconda Barbuto in 2019, and Last Words by Wen Wei Wang, which was the first piece Wang created for the company as its artistic director when he assumed the role in 2018.

The Friday and Saturday performances start at 7:30 p.m. in MacEwan’s Triffo Theatre, and tickets start at $20 from
